Dev Blog Update: Forging New Paths Version 0.6.5

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

Greetings, champions! The fires of creativity burn bright as we continue to shape the world of Old Mana Game. Today’s tale brings updates from the workshop as we test new mechanics and refine the designs that bring this game to life.

A Test of Steel: Experimenting with the Equipment System

One of the key trials in our current phase is the testing of a new Equipment System. In this version, champions can access a separate Equipment Deck, filled with powerful gear. Players will use their hard-earned gold to acquire this equipment during the game.

Each piece of gear offers unique abilities that enhance your champion. These abilities can then be activated using mana during the first phase of your turn. While still in its early stages, this system aims to add a fresh layer of strategy to the battlefield. We’ll see how it performs as we continue testing and refining.

Crafting the Look: Card Design Evolves

Another area of focus has been the visual identity of cards, particularly for Locations and Traps. To make the game more intuitive, I’ve started creating unique design elements for each card type. These changes ensure that cards are instantly recognizable—not just by their text, but by their appearance.

That said, this is very much a work in progress. I often find myself reworking designs, chasing the elusive “perfect look.” For me, the visuals are a vital part of the experience. They need to feel as immersive and exciting as the gameplay itself.

Stepping into the Arena: Playtesting Progress

Playtesting remains at the heart of this phase. Last weekend, we spent seven hours putting the game through its paces, testing new mechanics and polishing existing ones. More sessions are planned for the coming weekend to keep the momentum going.

Looking ahead, I’m preparing to bring local communities in northern Germany into the fold for the next step: Open Playtesting. Their feedback will be instrumental in refining the experience and ensuring the game is as engaging as possible.

That’s all for now, champions. Each step forward brings us closer to the vision of Old Mana Game—a world of strategy, adventure, and storytelling that I hope you’ll love as much as I do. Until next time, may your gold be plentiful and your champions victorious!

Yours in creation,

Indi
